mt backgroundAs part of the new Sacred Himalaya Initiative (SHI) being launched this year, the India China Institute (ICI) at The New School is looking to hire a qualified postdoctoral candidate for an 18-month position working on this new research project. The position will run from July 2015 to January 2017, and will involved teaching two courses at The New School, as well as 6-8 months of fieldwork and research in the Himalaya as part of this new Initiative.

More details about the SHI, which builds on the past three years of work through the Everyday Religion and Sustainable Environments in the Himalaya (ERSEH) initiative, can be found on the Sacred Himalaya Initiative (SHI) page here. This new effort will focus on the idea of sacred landscapes and sustainable futures in the Himalaya, and will be focused on a series of pilgrimage routes and areas linked to the sacred Mount Kailash, a holy site for millions of Himalayan and South Asian religious communities (Buddhist, Jain, Hindu, Bonpo, Sikh, and local animist). Exploring how issues such as development and climate change connect with notions of the sacred and everyday religion will be a main focus of the post-doc candidate’s research and project support.
