SUMMARY:Arab Spring | American Autumn | Indian Summer
DESCRIPTION:India China Institute invites you to a discussion with PREM SHANKAR JHA Prem Shankar Jha is a visiting fellow at The India China Institute at The New School and is perhaps the most well-regarded journalist and author writing in India today. He has contributed to The Economist\, the New York Times\, and the Financial Express. Jha has held the post of economic editor for the Times of India\, and is the former editor-in-chief of the Hindustan Times. What are the lessons to be learned from the Anna Hazare movement for the reform of Indian democracy? 2011 has seen civil rights groups take to the streets in pursuit of democracy in three disparate parts of the world. The largest and most successful by far has been the least reported. This is the Indian civil Society’s six-month-long campaign against corruption in the Indian State. A close examination of the origins\, development and eventual success of this campaign reminds us of several basic truths about democracy that have been lost sight of in the recent rush to democratize the world WHEN: November 14th\, 5-7 pm WHERE: Lang Cafeteria\, 65 W. 11th St. Co-sponsored with the Global Studies Department For more information: www.indiachinainstitute.org

SUMMARY:China's Two Mega-Event Moments: The 2008 Beijing Games and 2010 Shanghai Expo in Historical and Comparative Perspective
DESCRIPTION:This illustrated talk will focus on the meaning of China’s first Olympics and first World’s Fair as spectacles and effort to “rebrand” the PRC as a thoroughly modern country with state-of-the-art urban centers. To place them in perspective\, the presenter will look backwards to the mega-events held in the United States and Japan when they were rising rapidly in the global economic hierarchy and across the Himalayas to India\, where the Commonwealth Games are taking place this year in Delhi. The presenter will draw on his personal experiences touring the Shanghai Expo\, which he stopped in at three times over the summer\, and spending time in Delhi\, which he will visit for the first time this October\, right after the Commonwealth Games have ended. \n\n\n\nSpeaker Bio: Jeffrey Wasserstrom is a Professor of History and Chair of the Department at the University of California\, Irvine\, and the Editor of the Journal of Asian Studies. His commentaries and reviews have appeared in a wide variety of newspapers\, magazines and blogs\, including Outlook India\, the Nation\, New Left Review\, the World Policy Journal\, the Asian edition of the Wall Street Journal\, and both Time and Newsweek. His latest book\, published earlier this year by Oxford University Press\, is China in the 21st Century: What Everyone Needs to Know.

SUMMARY:Moving Out Living In
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \nIndia China Institute invites you to join us for a special presentation by Zhang Hai\, an adjunct professor at Parson’s\, The New School for Design. \n  \nThe real cases of housing and urban developments in Shenzhen and Shanghai offered opportunities and context to better understand how cities and people in China adapt to rapid urban growth beyond China’s impressive growth figures and statistics. The presentation will consist of a series of award-winning photographs\, short films and voices of various parties including the Chinese residents\, the government officials\, the real estate developers\, the designers and the scholars. It is a bottom-up approach to put the people into the forefront of the discussion\, and yet with a very close connection with the land-use policies\, economic and political measures. More importantly\, it is an attempt to evoke a more balanced debate on this highly concerning issue. Moving-Out and Living-in is a part of the research project – NEW DEMAND FOR PEOPLE’S HOUSING IN CHINA – conducted in Shenzhen and Shanghai\, China in 2009 and 2010.” \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:The Rise\, Transformation\, and Fall of Liberalism in India: 1800-1950
DESCRIPTION:The India China Institute\, and History at the New School for Social Research and Eugene Lang College are very please to present: \n\n\n\nThe Inaugural Carol Breckenridge Annual Memorial Lecture in South Asian History. \n\n\n\nThe Rise\, Transformation\, and Fall of Liberalism in India: 1800-1950 \n\n\n\nDelivered by Christopher Bayly \n\n\n\nChristopher Bayly is a Vere Harmsworth Professor of Imperial and Naval History and part of the Faculty of History at the University of Cambridge. As a historian and scholar of global cultures\, Carol Breckenridge (1942-2009) brought along with her to different cities and campuses not only her erudition and insight into intellectual debates on global and transnational issues\, but also her formidable gift of inspiring others through a rare combination of charm\, generosity of spirit\, hospitality\, and hard work. The journal Public Culture which she founded in 1988 with her husband and soulmate Arjun Appadurai\, the later Sister Cities Project\, and the articles and books she wrote and co-edited with colleagues\, have brought new perceptions to the field and remain as evidence of her unstinting efforts against the stultifying effects of academic parochialism on the world at large. At the New School for Social Research and at other departments and universities where Carol and Arjun have lived and taught\, Breckenridge will be remembered for the way she personified these very commitments by her concern and care for her junior colleagues and students\, even while\, as in more recent times\, she was courageously coping with physical challenges of her own. Mentor\, scholar\, and friend\, she will be sadly missed.
