ZHA Jianying (查建英) is the China representative of the India China Institute, and works closely with ICI’s partner organization Horizon Research Consultancy Group. A writer and media commentator, she is the author of two books in English, China Pop and Tide Players, and five books in Chinese, including the award-winning The Eighties (Bashi Niandai fangtanlu). Her writing has appeared in The New Yorker, The New York Times, Dushu, Wanxiang, and many other publications in the U.S. and China. The recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, she was educated in China and the United States, receiving degrees from Peking University, University of South Carolina, and Columbia University. Her latest book, Tide Players: The Movers and Shakers of a Rising China, was selected by The Economist as “One of the Best Books of 2011.” She lives in Beijing and New York.
