Congratulations to ICI Faculty Affiliate and former Faculty Advisor Jonathan Bach! Learning from Shenzhen: China’s Post-Mao Experiment From Special Zone To Model City (University of Chicago, 2017), co-edited by Mary Ann O’DonnellWinnie Wong, and Jonathan Bach, was published in Chinese by Haitian Press this August. The text was translated by Wang Lidi, Professor of Translation Studies and Associate Dean at the School of Humanities and Social Studies at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

A well-attended Shenzhen book launch took place on August 23, where O’Donnell, an anthropologist and longtime resident of Shenzhen, discussed the research and writing of the book and led a discussion with Professor Wang, Peking University Professor of Literature Yin Changlong, and writer Hu Yeqiu about reforms in Shenzhen since the 1980s. The book launch coincides with the 40th anniversary of the establishment of Shenzhen as a Special Economic Zone. You can purchase the English version here, and the Chinese version here.
